Who is Fit to Learn  for?

This motor programme is designed for use with primary age children with noticeable difficulties with gross and/or fine motor skills.. Each of the 10 sections has activities which progress in difficulty. The programme is applicable to all children from 3 to 11 years.

Where can it be done?

Some planning will be necessary as space is needed for some of the activities. This could mean using the hall or an empty classroom or sometimes the playground during good weather. Activities can be selected to suit the environment if a large space becomes unavailable.

What equipment is needed?

The activities have been designed using equipment that is largely already available in schools. Each activity itemises the resources needed, so some planning is needed to acquire items in advance. It may be useful to keep these in a separate box, ready and accessible for each session. Where items are not part of the usual school stock, consideration has been given to the purchase cost before including it in the programme

Who will lead it?

Usually the sessions are led by a teaching assistant. The Fit to Learn training equips staff to understand the movement difficulties they observe in the children and to report back important information to the SENCO.

How does it progress?

The children are assessed at the beginning and end of each term using the assessment sheets and any progress noted. If the child is improving they continue with the programme. If there is no progress, other agencies may become involved, e.g. therapists.

The children who participate in this programme will take longer to learn a skill than their peers. It is important that they should be allowed that extra time and not rushed though it to the next activity.
